Spanish Consulate joins Sunset Elementary in celebrating ‘Reflejo De la Herencia Hispana En Los Paises Hispano Americanos’
Dr. Leyte-Vidal, principal of Sunset Elementary School, the administration, teachers, students and parents, were distinguished by the attendance of the Consul General of Spain, Dona Maria Cristina Barrios who presented the Awards for the annual Hispanic Heritage contest. In attendance with our consul was the newly appointed director of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Fco. Javier García-Velasco García, Education Advisor, Anabel Sanchez and South Central Region Superintendant, Dr. Alexis Martinez. The program began with a festive parade of flags distinguishing the countries of hispanic origin and was followed by an array of musical numbers and dances and beautifully creative costumes. The highlight of the program was the annual play ‘De la Fuente de la Juventud al Miami de Hoy.’ This light hearted production beautifully told the story of Florida’s discovery and colonization. The celebration came to a close with a full force Carnaval celebration that would make Celia Cruz proud.
Why does SIPA fundraise?
SIPA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit parent organization that supports the Spanish International Studies Program. This program begins in elementary school and continues through high school. Participating schools are Ada Merritt K-8 Center, Coral Way K-8 Center, G.W. Carver Middle School, Key Biscayne Community School, International Studies Charter High School, International Studies Preparatory Academy at Gables, and Sunset Elementary. Our association supports this program by providing curriculum-enriching materials such as textbooks, periodicals, Spanish dictionaries, maps, as well as computers. Additionally, we provide funds for Hispanic Heritage Programs, cultural programs, field trips and scholarships for the annual fifth grade trip to Spain. All of this contributes to the success of the International Studies Program.
